I think this trend is regional. In states that see a lot of cold weather, waterproof carpet in your bathroom can be a nice luxury for those cold early mornings. So, the trend might last for the next 15 years. For the warmer states, not so much.

2022 Bathroom Flooring Trends: Layout and Pattern

Patterned bathroom tile isn’t exactly a new concept. The bathroom is probably the one room in the home where the trend of patterns, funky layouts, and cool styles has remained constant. Not just for backsplash anymore!

Previously, small, busy subway tiles were only used as wall tiles. However, over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a surge in subway tile bathroom floors.

When you imagine subway tiles, there are a few things that come to mind. You may imagine small, brick-like tiles or hundreds of penny rounds or even mini hexagons like pictured above. The subway tile look isn’t really about shape, but more about the size and aesthetic.

The small tiles create a fun vintage look in the bathroom that, with the right decor, can look incredibly charming.

Additionally, many small tiles will make your bathroom look smaller and feel busier. But if there’s anywhere they can work, it’s the bathroom, particularly as shower tile as they are slip-resistant.

I think they’ll stay young-homeowner-trendy over the next decade or so, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend them if you’re looking to make your home more sellable in the future.

Unfortunately, when people hear the word “pattern” or the dreaded “parquet” (which, BTW, just means pattern), they imagine the horribly out of date 1970’s parquet floors.

Don’t worry – today’s patterns are anything but dated. You’ll see sleek, upscale, modern designs as well as larger and larger tiles and planks.

Chevron and Herringbone Vinyl Floors

First, let me clear up a little misconception. Chevron and herringbone are very similar, but each has its own distinction.

Chevron floors require flooring to be angled and come together to a point. Although, some manufacturers are producing vinyl tile and vinyl sheet products with the hexagon and chevron patterns in the tile itself, which is pretty darn cool if you ask me.

Herringbone achieves a similar look by connecting two planks at a 90-degree angle as seen below.

For traditional vinyl planks, herringbone is much more accessible than chevron. However, the chevron vinyl tiles and sheets allow you to achieve this look without spending extra money on materials and installation.

Long-plank herringbone patterns are going to be super hot over the next year, especially among young homeowners. But I suspect you’ll also see a surge in chevron tiles, especially in kitchens, as well.

This trend isn’t likely to last forever, but it sure looks pretty while it’s here.

Large Plank Vinyl Floors

This is one trend you can expect to see every year in every style for the foreseeable future. Longer, wider planks make your room look larger, more open, and less busy.

Soon, short, thin planks will be seen as outdated. In fact, I would venture to guess that going with smaller planks could significantly reduce your home’s resale value. And also, they just won’t look as good.

Now, I do think eventually we’ll hit a limit for how large these planks can get. But, I definitely recommend getting on board with the large plank vinyl trend

Another top trend this year is texture in general. Scrapes, knots, wirebrushed, you name it. People want a floor that not only gives the visual appearance of being aged and worn but has the same unique texture and feel.

And you know what? Manufacturers are rising to the challenge.

These textures previously only available in solid hardwood, are trending across the board in hard surfaces this year.

Carpet textures are also doing some exciting things, bringing back old classics and creating patterns with varied fibers.

Hard Surface Flooring Textures

Handscraped

This one is my favorite! Handscraped looks instantly make your home look timeless and expensive. These are perfect for rustic decor with plenty of character. They’re also a great backdrop for industrial kitchens.

Because handscraped floors look truly finished, they are trendy not just with younger homeowners but with more established homeowners, as well. Handscraped floors are almost guaranteed to amp up your home value.

You’ll see trendy handscraped wood looks in traditional wood, engineered wood, laminate, vinyl, and tile. And, honestly, they’re all in! Each floor just has different advantages so it’s really up to you what you’re looking for.

Will the handscraped flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This unique, individual, handcrafted look will stand the test of time. It looks expensive, and people love expensive things.

Wirebrushed

Homeowners are loving weathered wirebrushed looks. This trendy look adds character to your floor without looking unfinished.

Another bonus of wirebrushed floors? They hide dirt really well so you don’t have to clean your floors as often! If cleaning isn’t your favorite pastime, that is a huge selling point. Especially in the kitchen.

In 2020, wirebrushed floors were the leading trend in textured flooring. However, moving forward, I anticipate that handscraped and distressed looks will knock them out of the running pretty quickly.

While the wirebrushed floors are cool, if the trend towards imperfections and character continues, distressed and handscraped wood will likely have more to offer in both variety and character.

Will the wirebrushed flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

While I don’t think it will last forever in the entire home, I do think wirebrushed looks will last longest in the kitchen. Especially with their ability to hide dirt.

However, if you want a seamless floor throughout your home, I would recommend going handscraped instead.

Distressed

People love floors with character and it’s no secret that distressed floors have a whole lot of it! With intentional scrapes, knotholes, and even burns, distressed floor textures are meant to give your floor character, like it’s much older than it actually is.

Setting the tone with a floor that looks almost historic instantly gives you an envy-inducing decor. Distressed floors make a great pairing with brick walls, fireplaces, stacked stone, farmhouse kitchens, basically every other hot interior design trend going at the moment.

Will the distressed flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

This is a look that will divide people. I do believe distressed looks will continue to be popular, particularly with younger generations. However, I don’t anticipate it will spread quite in the same way as handscraped and wirebrushed looks.

Smooth Flooring

Don’t worry; smooth floors aren’t disappearing forever.

Smooth floors are chic, elegant, and classic. I don’t think a time will come when smooth floors are ever totally out of style.

However, I also wouldn’t say they’re trending right now. They are holding strong, still incredibly popular. However, it’s the textured finishes that are starting to steal the spotlight. For the moment.

You betcha! They’re not going anywhere.

Trending Carpet Textures

Frieze/Shag Carpet

Frieze is also known as “twist” carpet and it refers to carpet fibers that are twisted many times, making them look almost curly.

The new, updated frieze carpets inspired by shag carpet texture are super cute and tremendously popular. A little time and technology go a long way and, now, carpet manufacturers have taken an outdated fad and come up with a trendy new twist.

Twisted frieze carpet is making a comeback! After shag carpets went out of style, the plush comfort of high pile carpet will probably last quite a while, as long as you don’t buy any crazy colors.

You’ve probably seen the herringbone pattern before. It was really popular for wood flooring, and now that wood looks are everywhere in floor tile, the pattern has traveled over too. These days you’ll see herringbone patterns with other tile looks as well, including stone looks and more decorative styles. It’s a decorative, geometric pattern that is classic and modern all at once.

For many homeowners, the herringbone pattern is an accessible way to lay out your tile that is also bold and unique. Long-plank herringbone patterns are going to be super hot this year, especially among young homeowners. But I suspect you’ll also see a surge in chevron tiles, as well, particularly in kitchens and hallways.

Chic, sleek, and modern, the chevron is similar to herringbone in that they both have a v-shaped or arrow-shaped design. However, chevrons are cut at an angle to get a cleaner look. Don’t worry about doing any of the cutting yourself, by the way. These days, the tiles are all set into easily-installed pre-made sheets.

The sharp, clean lines and angles of chevron tiles are trendy and timeless all at once. Plus, chevrons are oh-so-versatile. Not satisfied with the angular awesomeness all on its own? Mix tile colors, textures, and finishes to add even more detail. Contrasting colors easily create a dramatic look.

This is one trend you can expect to see every year in every style for the foreseeable future. Longer, wider planks make your floors look larger, more open, and less busy.

Soon, short, thin planks will be seen as outdated. I would venture to guess that going with smaller planks could significantly reduce your home’s resale value. And also, they just won’t look as good.

Now, I do think we’ll get to a point where enough is enough already and we will maintain these new traditional sizes. But, I recommend getting on board with the large plank trend!

Manufacturers are only trending towards even wider and longer planks. This trend will soon become a classic staple and will likely last the test of time

Extra-large tiles have been trending for quite some time with manufacturers continuing to create larger and larger individual tiles. Large-format tiles make your room look bigger, especially if you choose a light color. Additionally, larger tiles = fewer grout lines. Win, win.

Grout is the one thing that makes cleaning tile kind of a pain. It stains more easily than the tile and, because it’s sunken a bit from the tile, it’s harder to get in there and give it a good scrub.

So, this is kind of a trend. Why do I say ‘kind of’? Well, square tiles are kind of on their way out. I mean, they’ll never be totally out, but the trend is moving toward wood-look planks.

The exception to this is the bathroom, where large format tile is still super trendy and probably will be for a good, long time.

We always recommend purchasing at least 5% more flooring than you think you’ll need. For patterned flooring, it gets even more specific. We recommend purchasing rolled goods following the appropriate pattern repeat 

Buying extra flooring gives you a bit of insurance during installation. The amount of cut waste during installation can be more than you think, especially if you have to make specialty cuts. Plus, there’s always the chance that something goes wrong or is cut incorrectly during installation.

You should always keep the leftover material in case part of your floor becomes damaged and needs to be replaced in the future. This is called Attic Stock.

Thinking Underlayment Isn’t Necessary

Underlayment is a crucial accessory that most people overlook and only buy as an afterthought. You might look at your flooring budget and then ask yourself, “Do I really need underlayment?” And the answer is yes! Here’s why.
